A new app promises to allow passengers to stay connected with text messaging on commercial in-flight Wi-Fi networks for free.

Part of a project that has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, Flightful is powered by RebelRoam and is available for iOS and Android, the standard service includes text-based messaging on the most popular apps like iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger.

To start using free in-flight text messaging with Flightful, travellers need to use Flightful app to connect to the aircraft’s Wi-Fi network with hassle-free “one-click” login. It uses a safe and encrypted connection for all data to-and-from users’ phone. Currently, there are more than 30 airlines supported and an upgrade to full in-flight Internet access is available for US$1.

Flightful app is in closed beta testing and will be available in the AppStore and Google Play later this autumn.
