The new Flightful app is enabling passengers to stay connected with free text messaging on commercial in-flight Wi-Fi networks.

The app is powered by RebelRoam, provider of onboard Wi-Fi traffic optimisation services, and is available for iOS and Android. The standard service includes text-based messaging on the most popular apps like iMessage, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

To use the free in-flight text messaging, travellers need to use the Flightful app to connect to the aircraft’s Wi-Fi network with ‘one-click’ login. This uses a safe and encrypted connection for all data to-and-from users’ phone. An upgrade to full in-flight internet is available for $1.

There are currently more than 30 airlines supported. The Flightful app is in closed beta testing, and will be available in the AppStore and Google Play in autumn 2019.
