Gen Phoenix develops CirculAir Playbook in partnership with the industry

Aircraft interior materials company Gen Phoenix launched its CirculAir Playbook at the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) earlier this month which it developed in collaboration with Boeing, Teague, Elevate Aircraft Seating, Aerofoam Industries, and Müller Textil Group.

The company says that the guide, endorsed by the Aviation Circularity Consortium and Green Cabin Alliance, provides a practical framework for embedding circular design into aviation while also opening a broader conversation about how innovation in materials, engineering, and systems thinking is reshaping the future of the industry.

According to Gen Phoenix, more than 1 million aircraft seat dress covers are discarded annually and the majority of them end up in landfill or incineration. The CirculAir Playbook outlines how forward-thinking design and material innovation can unlock both sustainability and performance gains.

Key insights in the CirculAir Playbook include:

  • Circularity as a design challenge: Decisions made today determine whether materials can be recovered and reused decades from now;
  • Scaling innovation in regulated industries: What it takes to bring new materials and circular systems to market at scale;
  • Material innovation as a performance driver: Next-generation materials can reduce weight, improve durability, and enhance efficiency; and
  • The role of collaboration: Cross-industry alignment is critical to accelerating circular solutions.
