Jamco Corporation, a supplier of interior products, has designed a next-generation lavatory that seeks to resolve the challenges faced by passengers with reduced mobility (PRMs) in standard aircraft toilets. The design is part of the ‘Jamco Vision 2030’ project, a collaboration with JAXA, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency.
PRMs requiring total assistance have repeatedly raised the issue of aircraft lavatories, notably due to the narrow and small space being too confined to allow for caregivers to properly assist. To counteract this issue, Jamco’s Metamorphic Lavatory concept enables two adjacent lavatory units to be connected into a single unit across the aisle, allowing for a much larger space without reducing seat capacity.
When requested, cabin crew would manoeuvre the lavatory into expansion mode, where the doors blocking the cross aisle are closed to create one space. The door to the toilet and the internal partition would then be moved together, creating more space for a wheelchair and two caregivers to be able to stand in front and to the side of the toilet.
The lavatory also houses a changing table or children with the ability to support a bed for adults and a folding shelf above the toilet for ostomy appliances.
