The Seamless Air Alliance has published the first standard for in-flight connectivity, providing easy access to internet in-flight.

The Alliance collaborated with its member companies to create Seamless Release 1.0, a Modular Platform Architecture for in-flight connectivity. A modular structure based on open interfaces will allow the system to adopt new technologies but does not require customisation or the complete replacement of equipment in current aircraft.

The Seamless Release 1.0 enables technical flexibility for airlines and an accessible service for passengers, and seamless roaming with mobile network operators. This product is expected to allow airlines and “open the door” for mobile network operators to deliver a simpler experience for its customers. The implementation of the system hopes to save airlines time and money whilst minimising investments in technology upgrades.

“Passenger demands for in-flight connectivity are still ahead of the performance of systems putting increasing pressure on airlines to find a way to meet these expectations and gain passenger loyalty,” said Jack Mandala, Seamless Air Alliance CEO. “Seamless Release 1.0 changes the game by enabling airlines to take advantage of new capacity and innovation faster and more cost-effectively than ever before.”

Mark Cheyney, IFEC Development Manager at Virgin Atlantic, stated: “Meeting increasing expectations for connectivity in the skies is fast becoming a driving factor in airline preference. Virgin Atlantic and the Seamless Air Alliance believe that standardisation will allow airlines to be more empowered and more in control of their connectivity service offerings, allowing them to meet their customers’ expectations.”
