SmartSky, an in-flight connectivity solutions provider, has ceased operations due to lack of financing.
While the company were releasing news of a new partnership with SpectraJet and the acquisition of the FAA Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for SmartSky LITE on King Air model aircraft only weeks ago, SmartSky has announced the end of the line, with a message on its website.
“SmartSky was founded with a bold vision: to revolutionize aviation communications. We successfully built and operated a leading, high-performance nationwide air-to-ground network using unlicensed spectrum, made possible by innovative patented technology,” the company statement said. “Along the way, our team dedicated great energy and expertise, earning several prestigious industry awards. While our products were groundbreaking and we were growing our market share, we ultimately could not secure the necessary financing to continue our mission.”
SmartSky’s services launched in 2021 across the continental US, and during its time of service it partnered with airlines to provide competitive in-flight internet. Operations ceased on 16 August 2024,
The statement concluded: “We hope that SmartSky’s achievements have inspired others to dream big, push boundaries, and pursue transformative ideas to reshape the future.”
