AERQ has launched its modular and open IT platform AERENA to facilitate greater passenger engagement onboard the aircraft leading to a deeper understanding of passengers’ in-flight behaviours and needs opening new revenue opportunities for airlines and selected partners.

Airlines will be able to gain complete control over their digital cabin experience by logging into AERENA and designing their choice of applications, media content, and graphical user interface (GUI) to benefit from time and cost savings in application and content deployment due to simpler and faster operational workflows. By smart data capturing, analytics and matching, airlines will gain insights into and enhanced understanding of passengers to ensure accurate data-driven and intelligent decision making to grow their business.

“AERENA is built for business. We make airlines the playmaker of their digital cabin experience by giving them complete control over their operational processes and better visibility of the passenger for the first time. They can fine-tune their on-board product based on smart data. That enables entirely new business models for advertising, e-commerce, destination services and more. A product that will truly differentiate an airline from its competitors,” said Arnd Kikker, Co-Managing Director at AERQ.

“In addition, AERENA will enhance efficiency and flexibility through integrated and simplified operational processes. Fast deployment including cloud-based testing will streamline this time-consuming process to create savings. This allows updates and deployment of new applications and media content onto the aircraft in days not month,” explained Sang Soo Lee, Co-Managing Director at AERQ.

The platform draws on the experience and competencies of AERQ’s parent companies LG Electronics and Lufthansa Technik in consumer electronics, OLED display technology and integrating these systems and solutions onboard aircraft alongside engineering and certification services.

AERQ and ABOVE, a joint-venture between castLabs and Touch Inflight Solutions, are entering into a collaboration to automate the media content supply chain for commercial aviation in the cloud.

The service is currently being developed and is foreseen to be available Q4 2023/Q1 2024. Once released, AERQ customers access to the industry’s fastest and most cost-efficient end-to-end service for video asset encoding, integration, and deployment to aircraft.

Under the collaboration, ABOVE will focus on media file encoding, metadata generation, digital rights management (DRM) protection and watermarking. AERQ will develop automated, cloud-based, fast system integration workflows that allow customers to quality check proper CMS integration in the cloud.

Both parties are convinced that the current highly manual, slow, and overly expensive media content supply chain can only be step-changed when it is newly designed in a collaboration of partners across different areas of responsibility.

According to a press statement, the integration of both parties’ workflows creates a true on-demand service that will allow service level agreements of as low as 24 hours for end-to-end content delivery to aircraft. The pair claim the collaboration also realises cost savings of up to 10x compared to incumbent media processing and integration cost. In addition to optimised workflows, the parties aim to provide transparency and control to airlines unlocking the whole potential of the end-to-end media journey. Though designed as a one-stop-shop service, airlines will be able to integrate their existing media and ancillary revenue partners e.g. content service providers.

André Valera, Managing Director at ABOVE commented: “Collaboration is key to unlock the adoption of paradigm-shifting technologies. What AERQ is proposing to the market is totally aligned with what we envision from a media distribution perspective, where standards are adopted, and friction points are removed. We look forward to contribute with our ABOVE value proposition and, together, to disrupt the in-flight entertainment and connectivity ecosystem.”

Jonas von Kruechten, Head of Strategy and Business Development at AERQ added: “This cooperation showcases how innovation can be achieved when partnering within the industry and looking at the bigger picture. With ABOVE we are happy to have found a true front-runner in media content post-production services. Our innovative workflows will unlock both top- and bottom-line improvement potential for airlines through cost efficiencies and the ability to structure new digital products for passengers.”

Manufacturer of 4K OLED by printing technology JOLED Inc., and Hamburg-based AERQ have entered into a collaboration to integrate medium-sized OLED displays in aircraft cabins.

AERQ provides a digital ecosystem for aircraft cabins that consists of an open IT platform, in-seat system, and Cabin Digital Signage. The company has already demonstrated its Welcome Board display and is working on ceiling panels using large OLED displays. It has also revealed a concept for a class-divider using transparent displays.

JOLED is actively looking to expand its display applications and exploit the aircraft cabin displays as one of the most interesting applications. In the collaboration, JOLED and AERQ will work together to deliver the benefits of OLED displays and integrate them as a new standard to the aircraft industry through presenting a variety of touchpoints utilising medium-sized OLED displays such as Cabin Digital Signage and an in-seat system.

Naoto Hikichi, Executive Officer, Head of Business Division I at JOLED explained: “We think the cabin display is an adapted application for OLED, because there are restrictions on installation space and weight, and the displays are viewed for a certain period of time at a relatively short distance. With the collaboration with AERQ, we look forward to the introduction of our OLED displays on aircraft as part of the state-of-the-art digital cabin system and helping to enhance passenger cabin experience.”

Sang Soo Lee, Managing Director at AERQ added: “An advanced digital ecosystem that adds new value to aircraft will help strengthen the connection between airlines and passengers. OLED displays have the potential to change the conventional concept of cabin displays, and we have been working to bring this innovative display technology on board to the aircraft in a variety of ways. By the collaboration with JOLED, we are completing our OLED line up by adding mid-sized displays from JOLED on top of our existing portfolios that are 55″ and 65” from LG Electronics. This will enable us to stay confident that we can take the digital transformation of aircraft one step further.”
