Collins Aerospace eliminates the need for touching airport kiosks

By Featured, General NewsNo Comments

Collins Aerospace Systems, a Raytheon Technologies business is eliminating the need to physically touch kiosk screens during airport check-in and baggage drops. The company’s new Kiosk Connect solution provides the first full, end-to-end, contactless airport journey — a high demand as passengers return to travel.

By simply scanning a QR code with their mobile device, passengers can quickly connect to a common use kiosk using either the airport’s public Wi-Fi or the kiosk’s built-in Wi-Fi, with no requirement to download any apps. From there, users complete the check-in process on their phones and produce boarding passes and bag tags without ever touching the kiosk screen.

“When combined with our secure biometric solutions and self-service airport products, this new feature enables travelers to experience a contactless airport journey all the way from check-in to boarding,” said LeAnn Ridgeway, vice president and general manager, Information Management Services for Collins Aerospace. “As we work to help the aviation industry rebuild passenger confidence in flying, it’s incredibly important to us to provide solutions to improve safety and which are easy to use.”

Collins Aerospace’s ARINC SelfPass system is able to complete a passenger’s contactless journey through the use of a single token ID driven by secure biometrics. SelfPass can be applied to multiple points in the process, including check-in, immigration and security, lounge access and boarding. Each step can be completed in a matter of seconds with no need to present traditional boarding and identification documents. Air travellers simply step up to the camera for a facial match against the biometrics database then proceed.

Astronics Corporation has successfully tested its Ku-band tail-mounted antenna technology for the Collins Aerospace KuSAT-2000 SATCOM terminal for their LuxStream business jet connectivity solution.

The KuSAT-2000 Tail-Mounted Antenna system demonstrated download speeds of up to 25 Mbps service in the US and 15 Mbps globally utilising SES satellites. The team transferred approximately 12 GB of data during the test flight, including as many as seven devices streaming High Definition (HD) content from a comprehensive selection of video streaming services. In parallel to these streaming services, the crew executed multiple voice and video calls, testing a wide range of communications platforms.

In September last year, it was announced that Vista Global would be the launch customer for the LuxStream service. The 36 Global business jets under the Vista Jet brand are set to be the first to receive the system, with the XO brand following later.

Collins Aerospace Systems, a unit of Raytheon Technologies Corp, has developed and introduced the only Cabin Air Recirculation high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter installation kit for use on Dash 8 (-100/-200/-300) aircraft.

The HEPA filter kit mounts inside an aluminium enclosure along with a prefilter and together trap at least 99.97% of the harmful airborne particles that have a diameter of 0.3 micron. These include bacteria, viruses, pollen, dust, mites and other microscopic airborne contaminants in aircraft environmental control systems. To date, five separate airlines operating Dash 8 aircraft have placed orders and adopted the Collins Aerospace HEPA filter solution.

In the current cabin environment, air is drawn from the cabin where it is mixed with fresh air before being distributed back to the cabin with minimal filtering. Designed as a retro-fit for Dash 8 (-100/-200/-300) aircraft, the upgraded HEPA filter solution enables cabin air to be filtered before reaching the condenser mixer.

“Our customers are searching for partners and solutions that can provide higher air quality for their passengers as we work together through the changing aviation landscape,” said Trevor Skelly, Vice President and General Manager for Collins Aerospace. “These HEPA filter kits are simple to install, improve cabin air purity and provide a more comfortable aircraft environment at a low replacement cost.”

“While this specific solution is an exclusive drop-in replacement for Dash 8 operators,” continued Skelly. “We’re ready and able to partner with airlines and operators of other platforms to help deliver a HEPA filtering solution to best fit their existing fleet, as well.”
