Porter Airlines has selected Viasat for in-flight connectivity (IFC) on its 30 new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, as it looks to grow beyond its current regional eastern Canada- and US-focused network.

The new aircraft will be linefit with Viasat’s high-speed, reliable in-flight internet system and are expected to enter service in the second half of 2022.

“Introducing the E2 into Porter’s fleet gives us the ability to serve customers across North America,” said Kevin Jackson, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer. “Using Viasat’s technology allows us to create a distinct digital passenger experience for longer routes that builds on our award-winning approach to hospitality.”

Don Buchman, Viasat Vice President and General Manager, Commercial Aviation, said: “From our initial conversations with the Porter Airlines team, it was clear they place a high-value and emphasis on delivering an enhanced experience. Our proven IFC system delivers on this promise, which enables their passengers to benefit from the speeds, capacity and coverage offered by our ViaSat-2 satellite today, as well as our next-generation satellite constellation, ViaSat-3, in the future.”

Recaro Aircraft Seating is entering the regional jet market with it first outfitting on Embraer aircraft. The BL3710 and SL3710 seats will be retrofitted on an Embraer E190 and line fitted in Brazil on an  Embraer E195-E2 for KLM Cityhopper, the regional arm of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

“Expanding into the regional jet market is a tremendous opportunity for Recaro to grow our capabilities and strengthen our customer base,” said Dr. Mark Hiller, CEO of Recaro Aircraft Seating. “Embraer has been a fantastic party through this experience. I have great confidence in this move and our ability to rise to a new challenge.”

KLM Cityhopper is the first regional jet customer for Recaro. Slated for a Q1 2021 delivery, the BL3710 and SL3710 seats are positioned in a hybrid layout on the E190 and E195-E2 KLM Cityhopper regional jets. The E195-E2 is configured with 132 seats, while the E190 has 100 seats.

“Embraer worked closely with KLM Cityhopper and Recaro to certify the Buyer Furnished Equipment seats for our EJet platforms”, said Fernando Antônio Oliveira, Vice President Programs, Embraer Commercial Aviation. “With Recaro seats now certified for EJet platforms, a greater selection of seat products will be available for customers on request, further increasing customers’ options for enhancing the passenger journey.”
