United has unveiled a new wine list for the domestic economy cabin, with brut bubbles wine and a new rosé available in canned form.
The canned wines are provided by women-owned brands Just Enough Wines and Maker Wine, and United has decided to transition over to canned wines from plastic bottled wine due to the sustainability factors. Just Enough Wines sources its produce from Sustainability in Practice and California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance certified vineyards, and Maker Wine partners with women and underrepresented winemakers, featuring the story of the producer on the can.
By using infinitely recyclable aluminium cans, the use of single-use plastic bottles will be reduced by 4.7 million bottles a year. This is a significant transition for the airline to make, having served 20 million glasses of wine this year, with 3.2 million of these glasses being served in domestic economy.
The new wines on the list include: Just Enough Wines Rosé, a dry Californian wine; Maker Brut Bubbles, a Californian sparkling white wine; Just Enough Wines Cabernet Sauvignon, a full-bodied Californian white wine; and Just Enough Wines Chardonnay, a medium-bodied Californian white wine. The cans are 250 millilitres, around one and a half glasses.
“Our new economy wine list is giving travellers more variety and better quality,” said Aaron McMillan, United’s Managing Director of Hospitality Programs. “After the overwhelmingly positive response to the addition of rosé in United Polaris® business class, and ongoing fanfare for sparkling options, we’re thrilled to now offer rosé and a higher quality brut bubbles option for our economy passengers, delivering a more premium experience onboard.”
The airline is currently revamping its culinary services, with new partnerships with brands including Shafer Vineyards, Gary Farrell, Chartron et Trebuchet, and Pascal Jolivet, as well as over 60 new dishes to inflight menus and new products such as illy Cold Brew, Twinning’s Tea, and Tillamook ice cream.
