The chefs will also be creating themed deserts on its monthly menus, with September’s theme being ‘All Things Botanical’ including an elderflower and white chocolate dessert with compressed apple and elderflower sorbet.

In October, the menu will welcome roast chicken, as well as lamb hot pot and Welsh rarebit with chutney. The new dessert menu will celebrate the British apple season with treats such as apple mousse, with granny smith sorbet or British apple compote with vanilla custard and crumble.

Other featured classic dishes will include gastro pub classics such as chicken pie with mash, pork pie with piccalilli, shepherd’s pie, sausage and mash, as well as chicken bacon leek and mushroom pie. The menu also features vegetarian options using British produce, such as butternut squash gnocchi with blue cheese sauce and wild cavolo nero, and handmade ricotta mezzaluna with truffle cream and grilled asparagus.

Sajida Ismail, Head of Inflight said: “As we look ahead to welcoming back customers who may not have flown for a while, we wanted to mark the occasion by offering a really special menu that celebrates the best of Britain.

“Working with our catering partners, DO & CO and Newrest, we have created dishes using the best of British ingredients while they are in season. We are particularly excited to be offering a roast dinner on board. We know that Yorkshire puddings and crispy roast potatoes can be difficult to re-create at altitude, but our chefs have been working to make it happen, because we know that every British roast dinner should have them!”

World2fly, the new long-haul airline recently founded by the Spanish hotel company Iberostar, has become the first customer to sign up to Newrest’s pre-order digital solution, Fly’Eat.

Developed by Newrest’s Digital Lab, Fly’Eat enables pre-ordering, control and order flows management, their traceability and interconnection with on-board sales systems through QR code identification. It is offered as a white label directly integrated into the airline’s customer path. By signing a first contract with World2fly, the Group is deploying its independently developed tool for the first time.

Passengers can order products from the airline’s catalogue before the flight. This order is integrated in Winrest, Newrest’s ERP and then loaded on the plane. The airline crew takes care of the delivery of the products. This white label solution marks a turning point in the innovation of the Group’s in-flight catering offer.

The partnership with W2fly will commence in Cancun by offering in-flight catering services based on sustainability. Seasonal products are featured on the menu and offered using sustainable materials, such as sustainable cardboard boxes and cutlery made from avocado seeds.

World2Fly’s A350-900s are supplied by Newrest from its hubs in Madrid, Cancun.

World2fly will use QR code technology to evolve the sales process, with other airline customers expected to follow.

Newrest Toronto has begun providing in-flight catering services on board Etihad Airways to Abu Dhabi.

Due to the pandemic, the mobilisation and launching phases were carried out by daily exchanges with the Abu Dhabi-based chefs, equipment managers and ground operations.

Newrest Canada operates solely in the in-flight activity with four catering production units in Montreal, Toronto and Calgary. In Montreal, there are two catering production units, one for international airlines, the other for the Air Canada Hub.

Elsewhere, Newrest has begun the construction on a brand-new production unit in Israel.

The 10,000 square meter in-flight catering kitchen close to the Ben Gurion Airport of Tel-Aviv, will be operational within 20 months.

Advanced solutions will be implemented throughout the unit such as cobot assisted assembly lines, greener washing area and cleaning system as well as a digitised workflow.

Newrest spent three years researching the use of collaborative robots (cobots) to improve the productivity of its in-flight units.

The initial step was the creation of the universal robotic hand, which can grip any type of object in any type of container.

Staff work hand in hand with the cobots in a fully integrated process. The operator sets the pace, and the machine relieves him of having to do low added value tasks. This occurs from the portioning stage onwards.

The latest cobots are equipped with the latest technologies including robotic garnishing lines, technological assistance with the assembly of trolleys, preparation and dispatch of flights, automated washing up of dishes and trays, automated sorting of cutlery and automatic bagging machines.
